INT. AN EMPTY THEATRE. THE LIGHTS ARE
DIM. THERE IS A SHOW GOING ON SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE THEATRE. THE MUTED
SOUNDS OF THE THEATRE INCLUDE THE DISTANT VOICES OF THE ACTORS, AND THE
FOOTSTEPS OF THE TWO PEOPLE RUNNING AROUND. OTHERWISE, OPENING CREDIT
SONG IS PLAYING.
[As the opening credits roll, JAKE and ALEX (though their faces remain
unseen at this point) are sitting at opposite sides of the theatre,
silently, occasionally glancing awkwardly at each other. Then, ALEX
(still her face hidden) fires a shot at JAKE with her fingers together
in the form of a gun. He hesitates, then shoots back, but she has
hidden behind a pillar. Gradually, they begin to shoot more
enthusiastically, until finally, they are running around the theatre,
hiding from each other and/or chasing each other. They occasionally
throw themselves silently behind a pillar, reaching around to shoot
each other. They always miss each other, reaching from around set
pieces and chairs. No other people are seen. As the end of the scene is
about to happen in the background, JAKE sneaks up on her from above as
ALEX is crouching down hiding in the seats, and he shoots her. She dies
dramatically and he catches her in his arms. We see their faces for the
first time. Their faces are close, and we’re not sure what’s going to
happen. The clapping for the end of the scene can be heard, as though
the volume of real life is being turned up slowly.]
JAKE
[Whispering, close to her face.] I’m Jake.
[ALEX smiles.]
INT. A HIGH SCHOOL. MIDDLETON HIGH, IN COLORADO. IT’S THE MIDDLE OF
SECOND SEMESTER, AND THE AIR IS STILL BRISK.
[Inside of the school, it is between classes. Students are milling
about. We find ALEX LARKIN and ASH MARTIN at ALEX’s locker. ALEX is a
small girl with an eclectic style. Her bag and locker have
signs/patches, etc. on them that sport “green” and “vegetarian”
slogans. She has a beauty about her that’s not instantly noticeable,
and seems unassuming. ASH is a more stunning version, flirtatious but
not obnoxious. She is outgoing with few very close friends, but to
these few she is unwaveringly loyal. The kind of person who knows
everyone anyway.]
ALEX
[She is getting things out of her locker in order to go to her next
class.] So I just got Aliens on DVD. Jake and I are going to have a
movie night tonight. Do you want to come?
ASH
Sure, what time?
[Both of them leave together with art materials in hand to their first
class of the day.]
ALEX
I was thinking six. Order pizza and make it a double feature.
ASH
Sounds good. [Very short pause.] Hey, don’t you think your parents
would be bothered by all these movie nights you have with Jake?
ALEX
No... they know he’s just a friend. They don’t care. [Jokingly
suspicious.] It doesn’t bother your parents, does it?
[ALEX is joking, but ASH is subtly serious that something is weird
about the movie night thing. ALEX is obtuse, and doesn’t notice.]
INT. ART CLASSROOM. LOTS OF PAINT ON THE WALLS, AND PAINTINGS.
ARCHEYPAL HIGH SCHOOL ART CLASS.
[ART TEACHER is stereotypically in a paint-covered apron at the front
of the classroom, talking with a few over-eager students. KYLE SULLIVAN
is a reclusive boy in ASH and ALEX’s year. He’s tall and blonde, but
looks like he spends most of his time inside. He doesn’t have many
friends and hardly speaks. He is sketching, but looks up when ASH and
ALEX walk in. He tries to hide his interest in ASH, but no one is
paying attention to him anyway. ASH and ALEX sit down, still chatting
at the table in front of KYLE, pulling out their work from the cubbies
underneath their desk. ASH has been working on a sculpture of a tree.
ALEX is doing an oil painting of a duck touching its beak to that of a
bird of paradise plant. The bell rings.]
ART TEACHER
OK, class, settle down. I know it’s Friday, but before you all leave
for the weekend, you need to turn in the projects you’ve all been
working on before we start work on the next one.
[The class groans.]
ART TEACHER (CONT’D)
Oh, you’ll survive, I know you will.
[ART TEACHER starts walking around the classroom, talking to and
helping students, as work and murmuring resumes.]
ASH
[Joking as she works on the finishing touches of her sculpture,
throwing glances at ALEX’s painting.] When are you gonna paint me?
ALEX
[Laughing, as she does the same to her painting.] Oh, c’mon. You know I
only do animals.
ASH
Yeah, I was going to ask you about that. What is that?
ALEX
[Shrugging, and smiling serenely at her duck.] I guess I just think
they’re more interesting.
ASH
[Feigning hurt.] More interesting than me?
[KYLE’s eyes dart up towards ASH.]
ALEX
[Smiling.] To paint! They’re more peaceful.
ASH
[Sniggering darkly.] Oh sure, she wants peaceful to paint, but “bring
on the Alien double feature!”
[ALEX throws her a smirk. KYLE is watching both of them, unbeknownst to
them, as he works on his project.]
ALEX
What are you doing for the rest of the weekend?
ASH
Working, mostly. You should come visit me, it’s going to be so boring.
ALEX
It can’t be that bad, developing pictures. Haven’t you gotten to see a
bunch of weird stuff? That must be entertaining...
ASH
Yeah, I guess, every once in a while.
ALEX
[Looking sideways at ASH with a sly smirk. She nudges ASH.] C’mon,
what’s the weirdest picture you’ve ever developed?
ASH
[She can’t help herself. She turns her full attention from her
sculpture to ALEX.] OK, well this one time, a cute old couple came in
and when we developed their pictures, everything was all fine and
dandy: grand kids and vacations and blah blah blah, but in the middle
of the roll was literally them twisted in a position I can’t believe
they came out of alive and without artificial hips.
ALEX
Ew! Oh my god! ... Just think, who took that picture?
ASH
[Laughs.] Yeah, no kidding. But not many other shocking sex pictures.
Some role play. A lot of naked posing.
ALEX
Really?
ASH
Oh yeah, you’d be surprised. There’s apparently quite a market for
posed nude portraits.
[The girls giggle. ART TEACHER approaches, and ASH and ALEX hastily
stop talking and go back to their projects.]
ART TEACHER
How’s it going, girls?
[ART TEACHER looks somewhat suspicious and turns her attention to their
work.]
ART TEACHER (CONT’D)
Alex, I really like what you’ve done with the color here. The duck is
so animate. Very nice.
[ALEX smiles appreciatively and somewhat awkwardly.]
ART TEACHER (CONT’D)
And Ash, this is really coming along. I like the angles and the
contrast between geometric and organic shapes.
ASH
Thank you, Ms Prat.
[ART TEACHER walks on to KYLE’s drawing, an ink sketch of a face.]
ART TEACHER
Kyle, this is really great--
[ART TEACHER continues to talk to KYLE, but the girls resume their chat
and ignore the conversation behind them.]
ALEX
[Whispering.] Doesn’t Kyle work at the photomart with you?
ASH
Yeah, why?
ALEX
No reason, it just seems like you spend so much time with him at work
and we don’t really talk to him at all.
ASH
[Shrugging.] He’s kinda weird.
ALEX
That may be a little harsh... You don’t even know the guy.
ASH
[Defensively.] I know him! What are you talking about? His name’s
Kyle... he works Mondays, Tuesdays and weekends and... he always brings
a bagel and peanut butter for lunch.
[ALEX looks over her shoulder at KYLE. ART TEACHER is walking away, and
ALEX catches KYLE’s eye before she quickly turns away.]
CUT TO:
INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY.
[Art Class is over. Students are milling out of doors, ASH and ALEX
walk out together. KYLE is somewhere behind them, keeping ASH in sight,
but not making himself known to her. ASH and ALEX, still chatting
nonchalantly, both wave to several people in passing. They split ways
when ASH goes in a door (followed by KYLE a few seconds later) and ALEX
continues down the hall.]
CUT TO:
INT. GERMAN CLASSROOM.
[ASH sits down at her usual desk across the row from a cute senior boy.
She smiles at him and he smiles back and they start chatting. KYLE
takes the desk two behind and one over from ASH. She doesn’t notice
him. The GERMAN TEACHER walks in and starts fussing with papers at the
front of the classroom.]
CUT TO:
INT. MATH CLASSROOM.
[JAKE DANIELS is sitting at “the usual table” reading over his
homework. He is tall and handsome but he doesn’t know it. He is
easygoing but very intelligent, with a dry, clever sense of humor. ALEX
walks in and takes her usual seat next to JAKE.]
ALEX
Hey.
JAKE
[Looks up at her.] Hey, how was art?
ALEX
Fine. How was Spanish?
JAKE
Normal. Couldn’t understand a word the teacher said.
ALEX
[Smiles.] Oh, and Ash is in for the Alien marathon tonight.
JAKE
Awesome. [He starts counting on his fingers.] Popcorn?
ALEX
Check.
[They both put up one finger.]
JAKE
Sparkling cider?
ALEX
Done.
[They put up a second finger.]
JAKE
Kissables?
ALEX
Of course.
[They put up a third finger.]
JAKE
Freakishly awesome mozzarella cubes?
ALEX
Toothpicks and all.
[They put up a fourth finger and are about to do a short personalized
high five/handshake when JAKE pulls his hand abruptly away.]
JAKE
Wait. The ones with the color plastic thingys on top, right?
ALEX
[Offended.] What do you take me for?
JAKE
Nice.
[They do the handshake. Bells rings, class starts.]
CUT TO:
EXT. MIDDLETON HIGH.
[School is over, students are congregating outside of the building.
ALEX is waiting at a picnic table. She is looking at her phone. JAKE
walks over to her.]
ALEX
Hey. I just got a text from Ash. Her step-mom needs her to pick up her
brother and sister, so can I get a ride with you?
JAKE
Yeah, that’s no problem. Actually, can we swing by my house to pick up
my stuff and then just go hang out at your house till Ash gets there?
ALEX
Yeah, sure.
[They walk to JAKE’s car, chatting.]
CUT TO:
EXT. A CAR PULLS UP TO A DRIVEWAY IN A SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD.
[JAKE and ALEX get out of his car and go into the house.]
CUT TO:
INT. JAKE’S HOUSE.
[JAKE walks in first with ALEX behind him. She looks comfortable in his
house.]
JAKE
Dad?
MR. DANIELS
[From an office somewhere in the house.] I’m in here!
JAKE
[To ALEX] Let’s go.
[They start up the stairs to JAKE’s room and TRAVIS, JAKE’s younger
brother is at the top of the stairs. He is 13 and has a crush on ALEX.
Typical “cool” kind of kid, unlike his brother, bleached tips and baggy
pants. His baseball hat is sideways, and he wears sweatbands on his
wrists.]
TRAVIS
[Trying to be smooth. Failing.] Hey, Alex. I didn’t know you were
coming today.
ALEX
[In a tired, humoring tone,] Hey, Travis.
JAKE
Go away.
TRAVIS
C’mon, I’m just saying “hi” to my friend. [He puts his arm casually
around ALEX. To ALEX.] We’re friends, right?
JAKE
No, you’re not. Get off of her.
TRAVIS
Just chillax, bro.
[ALEX pushes TRAVIS’s hat over his face playfully and smiles.]
TRAVIS (CONT’D)
[Incredulous.] What’d’you do that for?
ALEX
What? We’re friends, right?
JAKE
C’mon. [He grabs ALEX’s arm and leads her into his room, leaving TRAVIS
in the hall, looking like a man after another failed conquest.]
TRAVIS
[Calling as the door to JAKE’s room closes on him.] I’ll just be in my
room! You know... if anyone needs me for anything!
